Tom & Jerry Mix

Tom and Jerrys make great winter drinks. Served hot, they have a wonderful mix of spices reminiscent of hot buttered rum, but with a richer, fuller flavor and a more complex spiced finish. You can easily make your own mix at home following the recipe below.

TOM & JERRY MIX

Ingredients

½ lb. butter

1 ½ lb. powdered sugar

6 eggs, separated

½ t. salt

2 oz. dark rum

½ t. of each: mace, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom

Directions

Beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer until smooth. Add egg yolks, one at a time. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until foamy, continuing to beat until soft peaks form. Mix egg whites into egg yolk mixture. Stir in the rum, salt, and spices. Store in the refrigerator.

To Make a Tom & Jerry Drink

Combine 2 oz. rum and 1 cup hot water or milk in a mug. Stir in 1 heaping tablespoon of mixture. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Note:

You can leave out the rum entirely and enjoy an alcohol-free version. We used to make the alcohol-free version for the kids when they were young and it is quite good. However, if you are not opposed to drinking a bit of alcohol, the flavor is soo much better with rum. Cheers!
